Here we have a very special car, the BMW E46 M3 CSL.
I am sure if you are looking for one of these, you will be up to speed on the spec, but here is a brief summary of this model.
CSL stands for Coupe Sports Lightweight, this badge has been used for the legendary BMW’s, starting with the 1972 E9 CSL’s. In 2003, the BMW M division got the go ahead to build a light weight special edition of the already excellent, E46 M3. The E46 M3 CSL was born. Around 1400 examples where produced, with only 535 RHD examples.
The standard car was given the lightweight treatment, along with improvements to engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes etc.
Starting with the engine, the BMW M division improved the engine response of the M3 S54 engine, by removing the stock airflow system and replacing it with a system where air is calculated directly by the DME. Further changes included modified camshafts and exhaust valves, plus a lightweight exhaust system constructed of thinner steel. The carbon fibre air box is one of obvious once you open the engine bay. But this makes a big difference on how this car sounds when pushed, it sounds just like a race engine, fantastic.
Looking at the bodywork, the CSL is distinguished from the standard E46 M3 by its various lightweight components. Available in only two colours, this one is finished in Sapphire Black Metallic. The most well known difference is the is the Carbon roof panel, which weighs 13 pounds less than the conventional roof. This continues to the lower front bumper, with an extra large single air intake. At the rear, the lower bumper is made of carbon, while the boot has that distinctive lip which looks fantastic. Further weight saving measures continues in the boot (you might remember Jeremy Clarkson’s review on Top Gear), boot floor etc. As a final weight-saving measure, the rear window glass is extra thin. Wheels are 19inch, lightweight BBS alloys, unique to this model.
Inside the weight saving continues with lots of the standard options deleted. Lightweight bucket seats, rear seats, door cards etc. The seats and CSL steering wheel come finished in lovely Suede / anthracite.
This weight saving package makes the CSL around 10% lighter than the normal M3. This was done very carefully to ensure the weight balance is kept just right.
All M3 CSL’s came with the revised SMG II gearbox, this came with improved software to improve shift speeds over the standard M3. You also get a special button on the steering wheel, for M Track Mode. This allows the traction control system to relax, allowing you to have much more fun before the traction control kicks in.
This example has covered only 52,000 Miles. Its a pampered car with a fully documented service history.
This example is finished in Sapphire Black. If the pictures don’t show, this car is in amazing condition. As you expect for a car that lead it life as a second car, garaged when not in use, the paintwork is in immaculate condition. Unmarked, deep shine paintwork, no dings or dents and obviously no rust. This CSL looks as good as you will find.
The wheels are the original CSL specific 19inch Alloys. All are in as new condition, fitted with the correct Mitchel tyres.
The interior on this CSL is in excellent condition throughout. Hopefully you can see from the pictures, every where you look it clear the interior has been looked after just as well as the outside. The bucket seats are amazing. So supportive, yet easy to adjust. The lovely CSL steering wheel looks fantastic and instantly you know your in something special.
This CSL comes with a fully documented service history. We have all the original manuals, a fully stamped original service book, both keys, a folder full of old MOTs and service receipts.
The CSL is a fast appreciating car. Made in very limited numbers, very well respected and sure to be a good investment going forward. But there are not many cars you can tuck away in your garage that could provide you so much excitement. Ideal for those dry weekend blasts. The driving experience you get from this car is hard to match, its absolutely addictive.
This stunning example has had the important ‘Subframe Check and Strengthening Procedure’ performed by the renowned specialists in this area, ETA Motorsport. This is a must now for this model, it will complete the lovely history of this car.
This CSL has just had the big Inspection II service performed by A1 BN BMW Specialist, so it really is perfectly ready for its next owner.
