Introduction

He we have an outstanding example of the BMW E21 3 Series. A 323i Baur, produced in 1981 having covered 97,000 miles. A well known car around the BMW show seen, its in excellent condition. Its ready to stand out and be enjoyed at any classic car show.

Its rare to find a genuinely solid and rust free example like this now, Henna Red has to be the best colour for the E21 and on this car it really looks good. This car comes with excellent ownership, the last 5 years being enjoyed by a BMW collector, taken on various classic car events. Before that it was owned by a true E21 enthusiast, taking this car to many club events, he cared for this car for 18 years. During this time, every bill, every MOT has been kept. It’s a testament to how well this car has been maintained.

Some recognised improvements have been made, to make this car more enjoyable for daily use. This won’t be for the person who wants a factory exact car, but if you are looking to use and enjoy your classic BMW, these all make sense. The car started life as an Auto, that’s good news as it means it had the quite rare, power steering. But now it’s been upgraded to a 5-speed manual gearbox, all correctly fitted. Then the engine, this has been upgraded to a 2.5 engine from a low mileage E30. So, you get the extra power and reliability from the later engine, but if you look in the engine bay, you would never know, very nicely done. It also has an AC Schnitzer front strut brace, to improve the handling, along with newer Bilstein Sport spec shocks etc. Again, this has been done correctly, no over harsh suspension here, it’s just been subtlety improved. Lastly, the wheels have been replaced with slight larger, 15-inch, period correct BBS alloys. These allow more modern tyres to be fitted whilst keeping the correct period look.

This makes for a really great drivers car, improvements to the performance and handling, with these superb classic looks, a fantastic car.

Bodywork / Wheels / Interior

Finished in Henna Red, this paintwork and bodywork are in excellent condition. Obviously, you can see from the pictures and video, this car has a superb all over, deep shine. Look closer, no dings or dents, look at the wheel arches, look under the doors, all solid with no rust.

The 15-inch BBS alloys are all in excellent shape. There are all fitted with nearly new, 195/55/R15 Falken tyres.

Inside this car is again in excellent condition. It benefits from very rare Recaro leather sports seats, all in lovely condition, featuring the very desirable, ‘fishnet’ headrests. The steering wheel again is a rare piece, lovely leather trimmed model normally only found on the special edition cars. The dash is free from any cracks (very rare now), the door cards etc are all just as well kept.

This Baur model features a removable roof panel, which is stored in the special boot compartment. You can also fold down the rear screen, to give you the benefits of a convertible whilst keeping the strength of the ‘Targa’ style. It’s all in lovely condition, complete with the tonneau cover for the rear screen.

Engine / Gearbox

The 2.5 straight six engine is a delight. Have the roof down and you can really benefit from the super straight six engine note this unit is famous for.

The 5-speed gearbox and light clutch also work and perform as they should. I think the auto to manual conversion has transformed this car, it makes the drive much more of an event.

History

This car comes with a massive history file. We have every bill / every MOT from the last 2 owners (23 years), along with the original manuals / sales brochures etc. Its lovely to see as much paperwork as this, its shows how well this car has been maintained and loved.

Summary

This E21 makes for an excellent, usable classic. With a few subtle mods, it makes this car much more fun to use and enjoy. It’s a rare thing now, a rock solid E21. Look after it and these cars will steadily rise in value.

MOT’d until April 2020 (no advisories obviously), this car is ready to be enjoyed now.
