Here we have an excellent example of the Alpina B3 3.0 Switchtronic Saloon. A very rare car, number 242 of only 357 cars made worldwide.
These cars are much rarer than the E36 M3, but have similar performance, just produced in a different, more discreet way.
The Alpina B3 is a real performance gem. The engine is really responsive, is very keen to rev whenever asked. The engine note is excellent, a real drivers car. This engine seems to have been mated perfectly to the Switchtronic gearbox, this really adds to the driving experience. So you can leave in auto for the daily drive and take over when you want to push the cars performance. The suspension feels just right, giving you real confidence to push this car into your favorite corner, at much higher speeds than felt comfortable before. The first time I drove one of these B3’s, I was amazed how much fun this car is to drive, its amazing how Alpina get so much performance from the 3.0 engine and the best out of this chassis.
Performance modifications started with the engine, based on the 2.5 , the engines displacement was increased to 3.0, producing officially 240bhp, with torque increased to 320 Nm, although reviewers etc believed actual figures were higher. The gearbox was based on BMW’s 5 speed automatic unit, with revised software and buttons on the steering wheel to allow gear changes manually. The suspension was replaced with Alpina’s, to offer the perfect balance between outright performance and luxury. Obviously on top of this you have the Alpina exhaust, not too load, but does make a lovely sound when pushed. Lastly, a very important addition, a Limited Slipp Diff. This is one of the last E36 BMW’s to feature a manual LSD rather than being electronically controlled. This is so much better for the driver on a rear wheel drive car, makes you feel much more connected with the grip and handling on this car.
Then you have the Alpina exterior bodywork and Alpina logo’d sports interior, complete with the Alpina build plaque.
Finished in Motreal Blue paintwork, this Alpina looks superb. A really deep all over shine, no noticable dings or dents, a lovely looking car.
Inside this example benefits from an excellent, Alpina logo trim, all in amazing condition on this cherished example. There are some extra Alpina dials as well, like the engine and gearbox oil temp gauges, oil pressure and selected gear indicator.
This particular car was first sold in Germany in 1995. It was then imported into the UK by the ‘Independent Motor Company’ in 2000. Since then its been owned by 1 serial Alpina collector until now.
